Mythical creatures, the divide between imagination and physical beings. Has anyone ever asked you what mythical creature you would be if you could choose? Thinking through whimsical nymphs, unicorns, gargoyles, mermaids, dragons, griffins, and anything else a curious mind can conjure up.
For me, while growing up, there has only ever been one option that exceeds all the others. It is a creature that conquers both the land and the sea. At least the one that I imagine does. The realm of mermaids is one of magic, amulets, and world-altering beauty. They angelically glide through the water and swim with the dolphins. The fish and the creatures of the underworld coexist with them happily.
You may wonder where this love of mermaids comes from. May I introduce you to the best Australian show, in my opinion. H20 Just Add Water. A show that follows three teenage girls as they navigate growing tails and carrying powers that no other average girl has. This show encapsulates that underwater mermaid whimsicalness. We see the moment that turns them into mermaids, the way the magic of the full moon and mako moon pool transforms their lives. Growing up, I had my own mermaid tail, without the scales, and a moon ring. It's possible I even tried testing my powers, although they never worked quite right.
I like to think I'd make a great mermaid, maybe not so good at dodging water and keeping it a secret, but good at diving into water. Maybe you're curious about what brought me to write this blog post. To be quite frank, I am rewatching my beloved show, and it is just as brilliant as the first time I watched it. The instrumentals they play and the visuals are mindblowing for being put out in 2006. It also happens to be the year I was born. Possibly a sign that I was meant to be a mermaid, maybe, but I'm meant to be a lot of things.
